We all love our trucks, and we know that because of this love, we're going to pay dearly at the gas pump every time we fill up. Since it's pretty obvious that these gas prices are here to stay, we decided to put together a list of items that you can buy that will help to increase your current gas mileage.
These aren't miracle cures, you certainly won't suddenly get 50mpg (though it would be nice), you should however see a noticable difference in the frequency of your trips to the gas station.
1. Performance Exhaust: (Average Increase- 1 - 2 MPG)
Sound, Performance, and Fuel Economy all in one product; adding an aftermarket exhaust to your truck can really help you out. With an average horsepower increase of 5-10% depending on your application, a
performance exhaust system is well worth purchasing. Not only will you see an increase in your performance, but you should see an improvement in fuel consumption as well. This improvement may be small, usually around 1 or 2 miles per gallon, but when used in conjunction with the other products listed here, you will have a well balanced, gas saving package. Just remember, if your foot gets too heavy with the new exhaust system (which they often do), you won’t see the fuel benefits as readily as you would if you stick to your regular driving habits.
2. Air Intake
Replacing your
air filter has many benefits. The first being you don’t have to replace aftermarket filters as you do with the standard paper filters. Most of the aftermarket filters available for purchase today are washable, and since it never needs to be replaced, an aftermarket filter can pay for itself in the first year alone.
An additional benefit is another small boost in fuel economy. An aftermarket air filter will average another 1-2 miles per gallon, an aftermarket filter is a cheap and effective way to save trips to the gas pump.
Another way to increase performance and fuel efficiency would be to replace the entire
air intake system. Aftermarket cool air intakes and
cold air intakes are a great way to add a little power and save at the pump.
Performance air intakes bring in cool, dense air that results in better combustion, and a more complete burn of the fuel present in the cylinders. Without the restrictive air box in place anymore you’ll also notice faster throttle response and an average increase of 5-10 horsepower.
3. Tonneau Cover
Ever feel like something is holding your truck back? Surprisingly, it's probably your tailgate. Passing air rushes over your truck's cab and flows directly into your open bed. With nowhere else to go, the turbulent air crashes into your tailgate severely increasing the drag on the vehicle.
Adding a
tonneau cover to your otherwise exposed truck bed provides a tight surface for airflow to blow right past. Without a drag-prone tailgate to slow your truck down, you can see an average gas mileage improvement of 5% to 10% immediately.
If you think the gas savings is great, you'll definitely enjoy the sweet looks and extra security provided by a tonneau cover. Most tonneau covers are simple to attach to your truck bed with common tools. You can save gas after an easy 30-minute installation.
4. Power Module or Programmer
Automakers tune their stock vehicles to account for drivers of all different styles, from lead-footed teens to soccer moms to your grandmother. Safely tinkering with some of these settings can not only yield some newfound power and performance from your engine, but it can also improve your gas mileage.
Power modules are simple to install and use. After easy installation that takes less than half an hour, your engine is reloaded with expertly-tuned settings for air/fuel ratios, shift points, spark timing and more. These modules are painstakingly developed with maximum power and efficiency in mind, including better fuel economy. An immediate seat-of-your-pants power gain will be noticed. Going back to stock settings is easy - simply remove the module and your original engine parameters are back.
Performance tuners take things another step further, giving you full control of the best settings to change for optimization. air/fuel ratio, spark timing, shift points and even tire size can be modified with the push of a button. Use your own mad scientist mix of settings, or use pre-loaded settings, including fuel economy modes. The biggest benefit to your vehicle is boosted horsepower, though a 1-2mpg gas savings is possible.
As recently as a few months ago, power module and tuner manufacturers have changed their product to help ease your gas bill. Once only effective when used with premium gas, these tuners now offer modes for 87 octane performance - yet another way to save money on gas.
